Homemade Oreos

Dessert is seriously one of my favorite things. My absolute favorite recipe to make, is Homemade Oreos. I’ve been making this recipe for years and have mastered some aspects of it. With that I have also gotten very creative, and make different flavor variations a lot. I’ll provide the recipe and at the end will list some of my tips.

Ingredients:

2 boxes Betty Crocker cake mix

1 cup shortening

4 eggs

Directions:

  • In mixing bowl combine cake mix, shortening, and eggs.

  • Scoop onto cookie sheet.

  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

  • Set on cooling rack (or cooling towel). Wait to frost until cookies are cool.

Frosting:

  • The frosting is really a preference thing. I always make my own, but it various depending on the cake mix flavor I’m using. You can also just used store bought frosting.

Tips:

  • I’ve tried making these with other cake mix brands, but they don’t turn out as good as when I use Betty Crocker. This isn’t an advertisement for that brand, just the truth from years of making these cookies.

  • The shortening. This ingredient decides the outcome of your cookies. If you want more fluffy cookies, don’t pack the shortening in the measuring cup, leave air gaps. If you want a flatter cookie, pack the shortening in.

Flavor Combinations:

  • Traditional: devils food chocolate cake mix, with buttercream or cream cheese frosting.

  • Blondie: yellow cake mix, with buttercream, cream cheese, or chocolate frosting.

  • Birthday cake: funfetti cake mix, with buttercream frosting.

  • The Fall: spice cake mix, with pumpkin cinnamon frosting, or buttercream.

  • The Red: red velvet cake mix, with cream cheese frosting or cream cheese chocolate swirl frosting.
